Computer users live in the Digital Dark Ages research shows
We were shocked when we concluded the findings of our large Backup Survey that covered 129 countries and over 4000 computer users and was published on our site in March 2009.
Even if 2/3 of all users had lost important data en even more staggering 82% did not perform regular backups of their data.
What is most surprising is that the sample was highly tech savvy readers of technology sites on the web. I wonder how bad the problem is among not-technically savvy computer users. How much worse can it be?
The Digital Ages Paradox
Information lives in a space and a time dimension. We have reached a point in development when information is really global – but the cost is that it is very short lived.
When most computer users look back they have nothing available from 10 years ago almost certainly. For most users it’s more like 1-3 years. When looking back further than that is like looking into a dark hole. The situation is getting much worse with the fact that laptops are now the predominant computing item, and they tend to break and get lost even faster than stationary computers. Worse still is the usage of digital cameras and no prints or backups available.
Online Backup
Luckily there is a lot of work being done about it. And computer users can and need to act now before they have nothing left to protect. With online backup you have higher protection that you would have than with using external hard drives and printing copies of digital pictures. A fire, flood, burglary will destroy it anyway. You need your backups in another geographic place that where you keep your main copies. This is the promise of online backup.
